The Necessity of Opposites

In this fireside we explore a fundamental principle of the great universe, one that has deep implications for understanding ourselves, our capacities, our limitations, our ability to perceive and the primary challenge of our days on this earthly plane.

The Necessity of Opposites Exercise

1.  Discuss in your group, in a paragraph or poem, the role of shadow in the image below.

2. 'Abdu'l-Baha states that without death there could be no life. Discuss in your group how this principle manifests in a forest, or prepare a short fireside talk titled, "The Forest Dance of Life and Death".

3. A star collapses when the outward force from fusion is no longer strong enough to resist the inward force of gravity. The consequence of collapsing stars is the production of heavier elements. Discuss in your group or write a paragraph explaining the importance of the death of stars.

4. Discuss how this ancient, Chinese symbol exemplifies the necessity of opposites.

5. Which is more beneficial, a life of struggle or a life of ease?

6. Challenge: Explain the necessity of evil.
